Fresno,

Fresno
is a mostly
farming community
in the central
valley of
California
with an alarming
rate of suicide.
The NAMI president
organized
a conference
to educate
about mental
illness when
she experienced
no support
in her synagogue
for her adult
son with schizophrenia.
She invited
faith leaders
AND persons
from the County
of Fresno
to begin a
dialogue.
I recently
got an announcement
from her about
a unique mini-series,
called “Forum
for a Better
Understanding,” on
a local television
station to
kick off Mental
Health Month.
The three
part series
featured both
faith leaders
and mental
health professionals
working together
to address
faith and
mental illness,
suicide prevention
and how to
connect people
with services.
